Eddie and Margaret ("Mac") Daffin came into my life when I was 15 years old, and they just happened
to be one of my newspaper customers on my paper route. I had noticed the 70-foot telephone pole in
their back yard ever since I started delivering their morning paper, and finally got up enough courage
to ask Eddie (K9CTP) what that big "TV Antenna" was in their back yard as I was collecting for the
paper one Friday night in early 1959.
He invited me inside to see his "Ham Shack", and my life hasn't been the same since. I ended up spending most of my free time over at their home absorbing everything I could about Ham Radio, and electronics, and consuming some incredible meals prepared by Mac. Eddie administered the Novice Class test to me after much patience in teaching me the Morse Code. Because of their hospitality I found a life-long hobby and a solid 40-year career as an Electrical Engineer. If Eddie had slammed the door in my face that Friday night in early 1959, no telling where I'd be today. They were indeed like my second Mom and Dad. So this is my small tribute to Eddie (K9CTP) and Mac Daffin, both SK's - I do miss them so. Bob Erdmann - W7TQJ |
